Why I Don’t Rely on Social Media (and What’s Working Instead)

Almost eight years ago, I founded my wedding florist business. Two years ago, I left that world behind to focus full time on my SEO business. Here’s why I don’t rely on social media anymore (and what’s working instead).

I loved the flowers (obviously), the floral community, and my clients. But I was craving more freedom. I’d already started planning my move from the U.S. back to my hometown of Manchester, England. At the time, two of my three adult kids (now all three!) were on the East Coast of the U.S., and I wanted the flexibility to travel, visit them, and work from anywhere.

Anyhow, that’s a bit of background you can read HERE.

Social Media in the Early Days of My SEO Business

I’m going to be honest: in the early days of my SEO business, I really struggled with social media.

What should I post? What should I write?

Creating content around flowers, weddings, and events I was used to, posting about SEO strategies, keyword research, or on-page optimisation? Not so much. Creating content for both businesses always felt like a huge “to do” on my list and one that I struggled to get right!

Fast forward two years, and things look very different. I rarely post on Instagram or Facebook now,  and I don’t feel that constant pressure anymore. It feels good.

My Website Does the Heavy Lifting Now

These days, my marketing feels calm, organic, and sustainable. Why? Because I’ve built a strong SEO foundation on my own website.

To be completely transparent, it didn’t happen overnight. My own business came last for a while a bit like the old saying about the builder whose own house is always half-finished. But once I prioritised my own SEO, things shifted.

Now, my website is quietly working hard in the background, helping ideal clients find me, even when I’m not online which, I have to be honest, feels great.

Why a Strong SEO Foundation Matters

Here’s the thing: when your SEO is dialled in, your website works for you ALL OF THE TIME - there’s no pressure to create reels, post on stories or to try and keep up with an ever changing algorithm - I would, however, advise setting time aside to add a blog to your website.

Think of it as creating a clear, signposted path straight to your digital front door. Instead of pushing content out every day and hoping people notice you, SEO brings the right people in  people who are already searching for what you offer.

A solid SEO strategy means:

  • Your ideal clients find you organically. Someone right now is searching for exactly what you offer - they’re actively searching for your services, not just scrolling past your posts.

  • Your website works around the clock. You’re visible even when you’re travelling, taking a break, or simply not in “marketing mode.”

  • It compounds over time. Unlike an Instagram story that disappears in 24 hours, good SEO builds momentum and authority.

  • It creates trust. People who discover you through search are often more ready to book or inquire because they’re already looking for a solution.

Social Media Still Has Its Place

I’m not anti social media, I can scroll with the best of them!  It can also be great for community, connection, storytelling, and showing up in a more personal way.

But it doesn’t have to be your only way to get seen.

A strong SEO foundation means your marketing isn’t dependent on showing up online every day. A strong SEO foundation give you breathing room, It gives you space to focus on your work, your life, or that trip you’ve been meaning to take.

Need a break from the social media world?

SEO isn’t about quick wins, it’s about sustainable, organic online visibility that gives you flexibility and freedom.

If you’re ready to stop relying on constant posting and start building something that works quietly in the background, SEO can get you there.

Your website should work just as hard as you do, even when you’re offline.
